Chapter Ten

“I just had a conversation with Gaia,” he said straight out as he continued to stroke her skin. “She told me that she wants me to take what she calls my rightful spot on the Council.” Mikhail was still having some serious trouble with that. “She is telling me that I’m to be the Vampire King and, with that, you would be Queen. If I choose to take the seat, we would have our own Royal Guard, but that means they would be around us for all time. Here, out of sight, but here. She also told me that she’s tied you to me in a way that you and I will have more than a handful of years. In all ways we’re bonded,” he said softly. “I won’t lose you to age. You won’t ever age. Your lifespan is now the same as whatever mine might be.” He decided to pause there, to let her absorb that before he got into more talk of the future, like the son they were to have and his role in the Council.

Mindy’s eyes were wide as she absorbed everything that he had to tell her. She knew that her mouth was opening and closing several times, and finally she gulped. “Mikhail,” she whispered and took a deep breath, “I can understand her reasoning.” She saw the surprise on his face. “Mikhail, you are the most amazing and best man that there ever has been in life. I love you so very much, honey, and I get why she would want you to be the first. You understand what it is to be shunned. I get it. I understand it,” she whispered.

Shutting his mouth as he stared at her, he let out a breath and smiled slightly. “I’m glad you do. I’m still struggling to understand it all,” he murmured quietly. “There’s more you need to know before we think this through fully. Gaia revealed that, one day, we will have a son. Our son will eventually take the Throne she’s proposing I sit upon, and during his reign he will give all of Vampire kind an even better future than I ever could.”

“What?” She let her hand fly to her belly and looked at Mikhail with shock. “A?” She couldn’t speak. She couldn’t wrap her mind around what he was saying. “Oh God.” She felt faint. Felt as if she was going to pass out. “A child? How soon?” she whispered. “Am I pregnant now?” She thought of the damage that Melvin had done to her and worried for an unknown child.

“No, you’re not pregnant now,” he told her honestly. “The child is in the future, not immediate,” he assured her. Pressing a kiss to her lips, he smiled slightly. “Vampires can breed, but it’s not always the easiest of things. We’re a little luckier on that front than the Wraiths, but we still have a few issues with having children.”

“But we will have at least one son, right?” That was amazing.
